We are looking for an Operations Manager to join our team located in Mexia, TX (greater Waco, TX).
This position will lead our glass manufacturing operations and is responsible for the effective and successful management of plant employees, operating procedures, productivity, quality control, and safety measures.
The Operations Manager will also serve as a company representative on regulatory issues, enhance operational procedures, systems and controls, business processes, and management reporting in a safe, efficient, and team environment.
Functional Goal The Operations Manager is responsible for recommending, implementing, and monitoring optimal, cost-effective manufacturing processes and methods in the batching and hot end of our glass furnaces and melters.
The ideal candidate will bring know-how in melting systems, operating procedures, and furnace design concepts to maintain and improve our existing operations.
Close interaction with plant management, batch and furnace engineers, shift managers and furnace / batch equipment operators will be required.
The role will also involve troubleshooting melter issues, managing furnace rebuilds, researching, developing, and implementing manufacturing techniques as part of a team effort to drive continuous improvement at our central Texas location.
The position reports to the General Manager and Regional COO and will have substantial interaction with the global engineering team and other company departments.
Responsibilities & Duties Lead and support batch house operations, furnace heat-ups, glass drain and re-build projects, new material trials, and audits of batch house and glass melting manufacturing processes.
Review and interpret data from batch operations, melting systems and standard practices to provide technical guidance to management, plant leaders, engineers, and batch and melting operators with a focus to improve operations performance in terms of safety, productivity, throughput, energy use and asset life.
Facilitate preliminary safety, risk and failure analysis for new technology, batch house operations, furnace refractory trials, design and or operating changes in technology or controls.
Provide scope of work and required planning and oversight for major refractory repairs including crown and general refractory repairs, water jackets, electrode pushes, and zone re-cabling, drains and heat ups.
Develop heat up plans and personnel and contractor requirements, manage heat up activities.
Establish baseline conditions for efficient plant operation and critical process parameters.
Lead efforts to improve melting capabilities and asset life.
Looks for ways to reduce touch points, eliminate waste, and streamline reaction time to control.
Provide elevated monitoring, training, and support for less experienced workforce.
Identifies opportunities for process optimization, stability and lowering manufacturing costs.
Implement, monitor, and report key performance indicators (KPIs) Develop, coach, mentor operators to expand materials and melting process knowledge.
Test, source and cost-justify refractory, raw materials, machinery and equipment Ensure proper permitting and environmental requirements.
Create work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and process related documentation.
Perform other related duties and projects as business needs require.
Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Glass Science, Materials Science or Ceramic Engineering required.
Minimum 5 years of manufacturing experience in a glass melting operation.
Fundamental understanding of batch, glass melting and glass delivery processes.
Experience in high temperature refractory materials used in glass furnace designs.
Familiarity with glass melting operations, melter hot repair, gas-oxy and gas-air combustion, electric melting and boosting, batch house operations, and glass raw materials is desired.
Experience in design, operation, repair, and analysis of glass / ceramic furnaces and melters Experience developing training procedures and manuals, conducting operator training.
Familiarity with LEAN, Six Sigma and continuous improvement concepts and mindset.
Good computer skills (i.
e.
, MS Office 365, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook, CAD software such as Inventor, AutoCAD etc.
