Transportation Engineer I, II, III, or IV - Waco Structures - (2304326) Position Information Transportation Engineer I, II, III or IV – Waco Structures The TxDOT Waco District is looking for a Transportation Engineer to help us manage our rapidly growing project portfolio.
Waco's Structures and Project Delivery Section oversees the planning and design of both bridge and roadway projects.
Upcoming projects range from in situ replacement of 4000-foot freeway bridges to small slab bridges for farm-to-market and off-system roadways.
The ideal candidate will possess a solid background in bridge and/or structural engineering.
As a project manager, you will negotiate with providers and Professional Engineering Procurement Services(PEPS) staff to obtain engineering services for the Waco District, then oversee those firms in the production of bridge and roadway projects.
The PM is the last line of defense to ensure quality, constructability, and timeliness of deliverables.
When not managing consultants, you will work directly with the District Bridge Engineer to develop, design, and produce plans for bridges, culverts, and other transportation structures.
Work Hours: Flexible (minimum two days in office) Salary/Plan Grade: Transportation Engineer I: B24 $62,004 – $101,556/ yearly Transportation Engineer II: B25 $66,259 – $108,666/ yearly Transportation Engineer III: B26 $72,886 – $123,267/ yearly Transportation Engineer IV: B27 $80,174 – $135,594/ yearly The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant’s work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.
Minimum Salary: 62,004.

Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.
Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Engineer II: Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance.
Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.
Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Transportation Engineer III: Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance.
Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.
Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives.
Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Transportation Engineer IV: Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance.
Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.
Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.
Essential Duties: Transportation Engineer I: - Assists in the development of specifications for special bridge design details and projects.
- Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.
- Designs moderately complex bridge projects and performs specialized design.
- Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans.
- Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
- Performs moderately complex structural analysis of bridge designs - Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Engineer II- In addition to the above: - Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
- May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
- Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
- Provides technical assistance in drainage design, resolution of drainage complaints, hydraulics evaluations and other hydrology matters Transportation Engineer III: - In addition to the I and II above: - Designs highly complex bridge projects and performs specialized design.
- Performs advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
Transportation Engineer IV: - In addition to all the above duties: - Chairs or serves as a member of a contract selection team.
- Performs highly advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
- Serves as a project manager overseeing consultants performing advanced and complex engineering work.
Minimum Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience: Transportation Engineer I: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience Transportation Engineer II: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience Transportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).
Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license.
This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Licensed Prof Engineer* If performing underwater bridge inspections: Must have Open Water Diver certification.
For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.
*Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
