*Qualifications: *Demonstrate competence in the specialty area(s) to be performed *AND*
Registered by the ARDMS in OB/Gyn & Abdomen, or ARRT (S) credential *AND*
Registry eligible by the ARDMS in Vascular Ultrasound (RVT), or ARRT (VS) credential *AND*
State Licensed by the Texas Medical Board (MRT) *AND*
Demonstrate proficiency with computer skills and PACS systems
*Education: *Certificate or Diploma from an accredited ultrasound program
Maintain current required CMEs
*Experience: *2-years minimum full-time employment in ultrasound post-graduation from program
*Position Summary*
The Staff Sonographer functions as a professional healthcare provider who works under the authority of the supervising physician by providing clinically relevant information to assist the provider with the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
The Staff Sonographer’s roles and responsibilities include providing diagnostic services and various clinical specialties.
The Staff Sonographer’s workflow is performed consistent with their education and training, and in accordance with Waco Family Medicine’s policies, procedures, and professional standards.
*Responsibilities* * Prepare exam room and equipment in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
* Assume responsibility for the safety of the patient during the sonographic examination.
* Review patient medical history, supporting clinical information, and obtain prior related studies.
* Ensure that the sonography examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard of “medical necessity.
” * Communicate with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient’s ability to understand.
* Use proper patient positioning devices, equipment adjustment, and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to ensure patient & sonographer’s comfort and safety.
* Conduct patient clinical assessment and perform the diagnostic medical sonography examination ordered by the supervising physician in accordance with professional and facility protocols.
* Apply independent, professional, ethical judgment, and critical thinking to safely perform diagnostic sonography procedures and image appropriate anatomical and pathological conditions.
* Acquire additional ultrasound images to facilitate optimum diagnostic results for interpreting physicians.
* Identify and document any limitations to the sonography examination.
* Review images and exam results and scan the preliminary findings into PACS.
* Refer specific diagnostic, treatment or prognosis questions to the appropriate provider or nurse.
* Maintain patient privacy/confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA using facility policies, and procedures.
* Adhere to accepted professional and ethical standards.
* Provide patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Sonographer.
* Assist other staff members, cover other sites as needed, and perform detailed job duties as assigned.
*Equipment Use and Maintenance* * Perform and document quality control procedures to ensure that the ultrasound equipment operates at optimal levels.
(equipment filters, equipment sterilization chemicals) * Exercise responsibility to ensure that the ultrasound equipment is functioning accurately.
*Documentation and Reporting* * Document any incidental findings that might impact patient safety or patient care and provide that information to the interpreting physician and ordering provider.
* Notify the provider of imaging results if they may require immediate medical attention.
* Operate the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) per department protocol.
* Exercise responsibility for the maintenance and accuracy of facility reports, database records and logs.
* Burn imaging CDs when needed for medical records or for patient outside referrals.
*Quality Assessment/Quality Improvement* * Ensure that the sonographic images meet the facility standards for Quality Assurance before the exam is released for interpretation.
* Work with the appropriate staff to ensure quality patient care.
* Carry out Quality Assurance protocols and Quality Improvement measures within the facility.
*Health Care Team Interaction* * Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with co-workers, administrators, and members of the health care team.
* Assist with the education and training of physician residents.
* Adhere to the facility policies regarding attendance, tardiness, and absenteeism, and give sufficient notice when schedule changes are requested.
