We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Orientation and mobility Specialist to join our team.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for empowering individuals with visual impairments, providing specialized instruction, and fostering independence.
As part of the role of a Visual Impairment Teacher, maintaining regular and effective communication with parents is crucial.
The aim is to assist parents in developing a realistic understanding of their child's abilities, progress, and future goals.
*Jobs located in the following areas: Edinburg TX, Giddings TX, Brownwood TX, Mart TX, Gainsville TX* Responsibilities: * Conduct assessments to identify the specific needs and abilities of students with visual impairments.
* Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) or IFSP to address academic, developmental, and mobility goals.
* Provide specialized instruction in core subjects, adaptive technology, orientation and mobility, and daily living skills.
* Conduct functional vision evaluations (FVE), learning media assessments (LMA), and orientation and mobility evaluations (O&M) for both initial referrals and reevaluations of students requiring visual impairment (VI) and orientation and mobility (O&M) services.
* Collaborate with educational teams, including general education teachers, therapists, and support staff, to create an inclusive learning environment.
* Adapt and create instructional materials that cater to the unique learning styles and needs of students with visual impairments.
* Use a variety of instructional strategies, tools, and technologies to enhance learning experiences.
* Provide orientation and mobility training to help students navigate their environments safely.
* Foster independence by teaching essential life skills, including self-advocacy and self-care.
* Regularly assess student progress and adjust instructional strategies as needed.
* Collaborate with parents, guardians, and other stakeholders to support student success.
* Provide regular updates to parents and stakeholders on the student’s academic and developmental progress.
* Share insights into the student’s strengths, challenges, and achievements.
* Discuss and explain the goals, strategies, and adaptations outlined in the IEP.
* Parent-Teacher Meetings: * Conduct scheduled parent-teacher meetings to discuss the student's performance, goals, and any adjustments to the educational plan.
* Listen to parents' concerns, questions, and suggestions, and address them effectively.
* Progress Reports: * Prepare and provide detailed progress reports that highlight specific achievements and areas for improvement.
* Offer recommendations for activities and strategies that parents can implement at home to support their child's learning.
* Accessibility and Resources: * Inform parents about accessibility resources, assistive technologies, and community support available for individuals with visual impairments.
* Provide guidance on creating an inclusive and supportive home environment.
* Ensure consistency in messaging and strategies between home and school.
* Future Planning: * Discuss and assist in developing future goals for the student’s education and overall development.
* Offer insights into potential career paths and opportunities for further education.
* Open Communication Channels: * Maintain an open line of communication through emails, phone calls, and in-person meetings as needed.
* Parent Education Workshops: * Organize workshops or information sessions to educate parents on visual impairment, adaptive technologies, and strategies for supporting their child's learning.
* By actively engaging with parents and fostering a collaborative relationship, the Visual Impairment Teacher contributes to a supportive and informed environment for the child's development.
Qualifications: * Bachelor's or Master's degree in Education, Special Education, or a related field.
* Valid Texas teacher certificate with required endorsements for subject and subject level assigned; TEA Certification in Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (EC-12) or TEA Emergency Certification in Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (EC-12).
* Proven experience working with students with visual impairments.
* Knowledge of adaptive technologies, braille, and other tools used in visual impairment education.
* Strong understanding of the impact of visual impairments on learning and development.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with students, parents, and colleagues.
* Ability to create and implement effective, individualized education plans.
* Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting individuals with visual impairments.
Skills: * Expertise in teaching core subjects using adapted materials and methods.
* Proficiency in using adaptive technologies and tools for individuals with visual impairments.
